Message from the Executive Director

Welcome to Artown: 31 Days – One Spectacular Event.

Saying that 2008 is Artown’s most diverse and exciting season to date is an understatement.  With an array of new venues, new performers and an overflowing menu of events, with some days featuring more than 40 events in just one day, Artown continues to make its mark on the arts and culture scene creating an experience unlike anywhere else.

After all, Artown was named one of the largest and most comprehensive arts and culture festivals in the U.S. by the National Endowment for the Arts.  And it’s easy to see why.  Our festival boasts more than 350 artistic and cultural events spanning 31 days and attracting performers from around the world. We strive to honor the reputation we have earned on the national arts and culture scene by enhancing our festival each season and this year will prove to be no exception.

Our lucky 13th season welcomes exclusive ticketed performances from award-winning musicians and artists along with distinctive theater performances.  Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis, a nine-time Grammy Award-winner, begins the festival which is also highlighted by the nationally and internationally acclaimed Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and Emmy Award-winner Mandy Patinkin.  Additional performances include Andrew Bird, “The Nigerian Spam Scam” Scam and Sara Juli’s The Money Conversation.

Combined with our seasonal favorites for families and kids with the Monday Night Family Series, Discover the Arts and the Missoula Children's Theatre, our Movies in the Park, the Food For the Soul World Music Series and a wide-ranging list of multicultural events, Artown strives to ignite a passion for the arts no matter the age or interest.

What makes Artown the special attraction it is known for is that nearly 60 percent of our events are free to the public.  It is our way of embracing the growing arts movement and continuing the momentum that has sparked in downtown Reno.  Artown is a celebration of this revitalization and is a tool for teaching all walks of life about the arts.

Artown takes over Reno July 1 – 31, 2008.  Visit our web site, RenoIsArtown.com, for a look at this year’s schedule, performances and a quick click to purchasing tickets for our phenomenal ticketed productions.  Or check out the 2008 Little Book of Artown, a must-have guide for festival attendees, on shelves June 16.

We look forward to seeing you at Artown,
